Batik Batik is a process of making a design by using wax as a resists to the dye color. Batik is done on fabric and bone and probably can be done on most anything. Dates from before Christ and has been practiced all over the world.
Bone Bone is from local yak or water buffalo. We have to assume that this is a produced as a normal by product of the animal husbandry. The animal is worth too much to imagine that they would butcher an animal for its bones just to make inexpensive earrings to send to America. We imagine too that some of the killing procedures could be more humane than in the West. Some of the bones could be from ones own cow that they milked and cared for its whole life. The bone products are generally hand carved.
Gemstones We used real stones as much as we can. Everywhere we find that stones have been treated to improve their appearance or durability. Sometimes stones are really powdered stone made into a stone.
German Silver German silver has no silver in it. It is inexpensive blend of metals that is good for design but not at the price or 100% silver. We have never have heard of anyone with a reaction to it. The term German silver may have been first used around World War II.
Hand Woven Much of the hand woven items we sell are made on back strap looms and are limited to usually 15 inches width. Local producers all over the world have been weaving this way for millenniums. Horn Horn is from Yak or Water Buffalo. Story is similar to that of bone.
Machine Woven A machine woven scarf means that it was made in a factory on big machine looms. To have reasonable costs for these items they are made this way. There is still much hand work in the production. The looms are threaded by hand. Maybe the machines are programed but still sometimes the patterns are quite complex.
Resin Collection and organic and inorganic materials used to make wonderful jewelry. The plastic part is the most expensive so producers like to cut it with local ingredients.
Resin Bone Some of the bone items are really made from resin. They are poured off of a mold made from a hand carved model. The materials in the resin do sometimes include natural items, rock dust, and maybe sand, wood dust. The resin is the most expensive part so we imagine they use a little as possible.
Shell We sell many different kind of shell. Some of the shell is dyed. Other times it is produced with resin to create inexpensive items. We like shell things, as they are natural and beautiful.
Silver Silver is 92.5% silver. Now with Silver prices high, sometimes in India they sell 60% as 92.5%.
